This weekend felt a little like heaven.
For the first time in months, I didn't have to set an alarm. No school lunches to make. No backpacks to check. No rushing everyone out the door before the sun had fully risen. Yet somehow, my body still woke up at 5:55 a.m., right on schedule. I laid there for a few moments listening to the quiet house, realizing how deeply routines become woven into our lives. Even though school is officially out, my heart and mind haven't quite caught up yet.
Summer has always carried a different kind of magic for me. It slows things down just enough to let you breathe. The days feel longer, the sunsets seem more colorful, and somehow the simplest moments become the ones you remember years later.
The adventure started almost immediately after the last school bell rang. We celebrated my niece's 14th birthday with friends, siblings, and my boys. The party was held at a private pool owned by the sweetest women. The moment we arrived, it felt like we had stepped into a vacation spot. The pool reminded me of something you would find at a hotel, but with the comfort and privacy of being someone's special hidden treasure. Everywhere I looked there were thoughtful touches that showed how much care had gone into creating the space. Watching the kids laugh, splash, and simply enjoy being young reminded me how precious these years really are. I know I'll be sharing more about that experience in a future review, but what stayed with me most was the joy on everyone's faces.
Friday brought something I didn't realize I needed so badly: time with my friend Mel.
Life gets busy. Between work, parenting, appointments, events, and responsibilities, it's easy to forget how important friendship is. We spent the day wandering through downtown Poulsbo, exploring some of the new businesses that have opened this spring. There is something special about discovering places for the first time and sharing those moments with someone who appreciates them as much as you do.
We stopped at Poulsbo Coffee Company and Send Nodes Plant Shop, and the visit left me even more excited for our upcoming Meet and Greet collaboration in July. The anticipation is building, and seeing these businesses thriving reminded me why I love supporting our local community so much.
Of course, no trip to downtown Poulsbo is complete without a few unexpected adventures. We visited Poulsbo Candy Company, where I bravely sampled pickle fudge. Yes, pickle fudge. To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it. Some combinations just shouldn't make sense, and yet somehow they exist. Next we found ourselves heading over to Nordic Fox, where I found a few treasures that absolutely needed to come home with me.
As we walked through town, I found myself feeling grateful. Grateful for friendship. Grateful for small businesses. Grateful for the opportunity to build community and connections in a place that feels like home.
Saturday was equally full.
I spent the morning exploring the Hansville community yard sales. While I found a few treasures myself, my dad was the real champion of the day. Watching him score incredible finds is almost as fun as finding something yourself. There is something nostalgic about yard sales. Every table holds little pieces of someone's life. Sometimes it's less about what you buy and more about the treasure hunt itself.
Saturday I attended my cousin's Summer Solstice party. It was one of those gatherings that fills your cup in ways you don't realize you need. I met wonderful people from our neighborhood, caught up with friends I hadn't seen in far too long, and spent time with family that life doesn't always allow me to see often enough.
My cousin Peni truly has a gift. Every event she hosts feels effortless, welcoming, and memorable. She creates spaces where people connect, laugh, and leave feeling happier than when they arrived. As I looked around at everyone enjoying themselves, I couldn't help but think she missed her calling as an event planner. Few people can bring people together the way she does.
Father's Day arrived with pancakes, errands, and plenty of time spent outdoors. Well, to be honest, I mostly supervised while the boys did the heavy lifting in the yard. They absolutely knocked it out of the park. Watching them grow into hardworking, capable young men is one of the greatest privileges of my life. Every year I see a little more independence, a little more confidence, and a little more of the incredible adults they are becoming. As I sit here reflecting on the weekend, I can't help but smile.
If these last few days are any indication of what this summer will bring, we're in for a season filled with adventure, laughter, friendship, family, and countless core memories. The kind of memories that sneak up on you years later when you hear a song, smell sunscreen, or feel warm grass beneath your feet. That's what summer has always been for me.
It's the season where life feels a little lighter. Where schedules loosen their grip. Where conversations linger longer. Where sunsets become events and ordinary days somehow become extraordinary.
I love the carefree feeling summer brings. I love the freedom, the spontaneity, and the way everyone seems to move just a little slower. Most of all, I love the opportunity to be present. To soak in these moments with the people I love while they're happening, most importantly with the boys.
Because if there's one thing I've learned, it's that the moments we call ordinary today often become the memories we treasure most tomorrow.
